Happy Holidays!
Every year instead of exchanging presents Dave and I make each other an ornament. We create it in secret and then reveal it on Christmas morning. Dave gets up earlier than I do, so he’ll put his ornament on the tree, and when I get up we go to the tree. I have to search to see any new ornaments. This year I was surprised. He made three!! After I’ve found his, Dave leaves the room and I add mine to the tree for him to find when I call him back into the living room.
He’s really been getting back into woodworking so he made these beautiful candy canes. They are made of holly and bloodwood – no paint used. He made us two!
The other ornament was an angel. She’s so sweet.
I always like to make something that relates to what I’ve been working on this year. Our trip to Moab was such a wonderful experience. I made two art quilts from my pictures at Arches National Park. See how I did that on this post. I wanted to make my ornament about Moab and all I could think about was Moab Man. So here he is on the tree.
And the card I made to go with the ornament.
It’s such a fun tradition. When we put up the tree we talk about the ornaments as we hang them. It’s so much fun to look back at what we’ve made for each other.
I hope this holiday brings you hope and peace. I can’t believe this year is almost over!

What a fabulous idea. My husband and I have gotten to the “we don’t need anything stage” so making ornaments might be just the thing! Thank you for sharing!
I love your tradition, and all the wonderful ornaments you both have created over the years! Merry Christmas to you both, and wishing you a great 2025!
Thank you for sharing your lovely tradition with us. I always enjoy reading about the studio-stories and the irises.
Wishing both of you all the best for 2025!
Linda, Thank you! I’m hoping to spend more time in my studio and do more videos next year. Hope 2025 is the best year ever for you. Thanks for dropping by.
Judy, Thanks. It’s so much fun! Wishing you the best for 2025 too!!
Liz, We started this tradition our first Christmas in 2005 when we were dating. We stopped exchanging gifts many years ago as we are in the same stage. If we want or need anything we’ll buy it on sale. It’s fun to look back all those years at what we made. Thanks for dropping by and happy 2025!
What a really lovely idea. Happy New year to you both.
Kathy, Thank you. Happy New Year to you too!
